Weekly Announcements

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS—School is just around the corner! Shopping for school supplies, books, and fall clothes becomes a part of everyone’s schedule. On Sunday, August 6th, we want to celebrate and bless the beginning of another school year.  Students, preschool through adult, are asked to bring backpacks or lunch boxes to worship on August 6th.  The services will lift up not only children and students of all ages but also teachers, aides, principals, administrators, secretaries, cooks, librarians, janitors, and bus drivers.

Youth Ministry Committee—We are pleased to announce that session has warmly approved the creation of a Youth Ministry Committee! The purpose of the Youth Ministry Committee is to provide structure and support for programs that nurture faith and service amongst our congregation’s youth (ages 6th–12th grade). The committee is to be made up of at least six members, and more are welcome: two must be youth (current, or recently graduated), two must be parents of youth, one must be a member of the Christian Education Committee, and one shall serve as chairperson. A single individual may satisfy more than one of these requirements (for example, a parent who serves on CE can be chairperson). The committee will meet monthly. If you are interested in serving on this committee or would like more information, please email Dave Strickler at dave.fpcjeffcity@gmail.com. The deadline for nominations is Sunday, August 6 so that session can consider and approve a slate of nominees at its August 9 meeting.

PENTECOST OFFERING—Pentecost Offering Benefiting Local Food Backpack Program: We will collect the Pentecost Offering on August 6, when we bless our children’s backpacks for the coming school year–yes, we know we’re late, but technically the season of Pentecost lasts until Advent! Gifts made through this offering will benefit both the ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency and the ministry here at FPC because 40% of the offering can be retained by individual congregations to make an impact in the lives of young people within our own community.

The 40% of the offering we retain will be donated to Joppa School in Grainger County for their weekend food program.  Students are identified by teachers or parent request as needing food for the weekend. The food is packed into backpacks, and enough is provided for the family. About 75 children are receiving these backpacks.  Some food comes from Second Harvest.  Mrs. Roach, the principal, said that donations are greatly appreciated.

DAY OF PRAYER—On Wednesday, August 9th, from 10:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. the Church will be open for those who wish to come in and pray.  This event coincides with our 150th Challenge, which is to pray for 150 minutes in August.

Meals for Meadows Family—Life in the Meadows house is very busy with the arrival of triplet boys! Let’s show them our love and support by providing meals, making that one less thing they have to do! If you would like to prepare a meal, please go to www.takethemameal.com to sign up (go to the Find box and type in Meadows for the recipients name and the password is 3333). Meals should be left in the church kitchen by 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Dates, meal ideas, likes and dislikes can all be found on the website. Please call or text Roxanne Moser at 865-696-4004 if you have any questions or need help signing up.
